Tips on your way to the top

  • Do your research on the mountain before you set off, to ensure you know what you are in for and that it’s well within your capabilities.
  •

  • Leave a route card of your journey, including any potential detours, with someone and check in with them when you return.

  • Take a map and compass - don’t rely on GPS: it only takes a flat battery or a drop in signal to leave you in a spot of bother. Even if you know the mountain well, you can still lose your way in bad weather.

  • Know where you are. If you end up requiring assistance it’s extremely useful for the rescue services to know your precise whereabouts.

  • Pack extra clothes and food, and take plenty of water.

  • Be prepared. We may not have the highest peaks, but we do have the most unpredictable weather: a glorious sunny day can turn into a snowstorm before you know it.

  • There are loads of guidebooks, websites and information points that are well worth looking at before you start.
